Threatened, Endangered, and Extinct Species

Environmental factors, natural or human caused, can affect the diversity of an ecosystem and threaten, endanger or extinct organisms. A threatened species is a species likely, in the near future, to become an endangered species within all or much of its range. An endangered species is a species at risk of extinction because of human activity, changes in climate, or changes in predator-prey ratios. An extinct species is having no living members due to climate change, disease, destruction of habitat, local or worldwide natural disasters, and development into new species (speciation). Many threatened and endangered organisms are specialized through coevolution and cannot tolerate wide environmental changes; the loss of organisms from an ecosystem ultimately impacts human populations and other organisms in that ecosystem.
